Season: October / Samhain Season
Location: Herb & Smudge Apothecary | 201 26th St, Galveston, TX
The Invitation
As the light fades and the Blood Moon rises, Herb & Smudge Apothecary turns the wheel toward the darker half of the year. Thorn & Folklore is the deep, protective sister to our Spring celebration—a tribute to the thinning of the veil and the "Hedge" between worlds. We are calling 20 Mask Weavers to create a vessel of transformation. This year, the blossoms are replaced by the bramble, and the crown is replaced by the mask.
Rules of the Craft: The Shadow Mask
To enter the gallery and be eligible for the title of The Veiled Mystic, your mask must meet these five requirements:
- The Masquerade Silhouette: Your creation must be a wearable mask (half-mask, eye-mask, or full-face) that represents the "Veiled Self"—the part of us that walks between worlds.
- The Armored Earth (Protective Botanicals): You must incorporate thorns, briars, or thorny stems. Think of common garden or wild cuttings like Hawthorn, Rose briar, Blackberry, Raspberry, or Thistle. These stems and sprigs act as a protective barrier for the wearer.
- The Island Find: You must incorporate at least one natural element found on Galveston Island that feels "Shadow-coded" (e.g., blackened sea glass, dark shells, storm-washed driftwood, or local salt-marsh flora).
- The Threshold Element: You must include a symbolic "Bridge to the Otherworld." This is your personal interpretation of the thinning veil. Whether it’s a reflective surface, a specific stone, or an ancestral charm, it must be a focal point that invites a spirit guest to walk with you.
- The Seasonal Signature (Artist's Choice): Beyond the required elements, you are encouraged to add your own additional decor that speaks to your personal connection to the season. Think of Autumn, Halloween, Samhain, or the path of the Witch. This is where you bring in your own flair—whether it's autumnal leaves, skeletal accents, velvet ribbons, or mystical symbols.
The Lore Scroll: The Ancestral Legend
Every mask hides a story. All contestants must display a Lore Scroll (parchment or tea-stained paper) alongside their mask:
- The Legend: Give your mask a name (e.g., "The Briar Oracle").
- The Threshold: Identify your "bridge" element and why you chose it for Samhain.
- The Ancestral Honoring: A single sentence or a name dedicated to an ancestor or spirit you are honoring with this work.
